AEO for Businesses: A Practical Guide to AI Visibility

The reality of AI search in 2026

Two years ago it was a novelty: "Hey, ChatGPT knows our company!" Now it's an existential question for any business with a website.

The problem is no longer whether AI finds your site, but what it says about you. And whether it mentions you at all instead of your competitor.

Answer Engine Optimization — AEO — is therefore no longer a technical SEO sideshow. It has become reputation management. What Perplexity says about your business in an answer is what potential customers believe. Full stop.

The fundamental difference from SEO

With Google, everything revolves around clicks. You optimize a page, you rank for a keyword, someone clicks, you get traffic. It's a transaction.

AEO works the other way round. AI delivers the answer directly. There's no click. There's only a mention — or no mention at all.

That sounds like bad news for website traffic, but the opposite is true. A mention in a ChatGPT answer is worth more than a click. Why? Because AI doesn't just cite anything. It cites what it trusts. When your business is quoted, you're not just another search result — you are the answer.

Three AEO pillars that actually work

1. Answer questions, don't just talk about yourself

Most business sites are talking business cards. "We're the best." "We deliver quality." "25 years of experience."

AI shrugs.

What AI does pick up: concrete answers to concrete questions. Not "we're experts in sustainable energy," but "how much output does a heat pump deliver in a 1995 terraced house?"

The difference between those two sentences is the difference between being ignored and being quoted.

In practice: rewrite your three most important landing pages around the real questions your customers ask. Every H2 is a question. Every paragraph is an answer. No filler.

2. Structured data is not optional

You can have the best content in the world. Without JSON-LD structured data, it's just an unstructured pile of text to AI.

The schemas that matter for AEO:

  • FAQ schema: the most important one. AI models are trained to use FAQs directly in their answers. Every page with FAQ schema is a page AI can cite.
  • Organization schema: tells AI who you are, what you do, where you're based. Without it, ChatGPT doesn't even know whether you're a real business.
  • Article schema: for blog content — gives AI metadata about the author, date and topic.

One tip: write your FAQs the way you'd talk to a customer. "What does a website cost in 2026?" is infinitely better than "Our rates are competitive and in line with the market."

3. llms.txt: the file nobody has

llms.txt is your site's business card for AI models. A short, structured file that summarizes what you do, which pages matter and where AI can find more information.

Most businesses don't have one. Their competitors probably don't either. This is your edge.

An llms.txt doesn't need to be complex. Five lines about your business, links to your key pages, done. It's the difference between AI having to interpret your site (and getting it wrong) and AI knowing exactly what to read.

What you should NOT do

Two things I see businesses trip over every week:

AI content without editing. "Just let ChatGPT write an FAQ page." The result is generic, predictable, and AI models are getting better and better at spotting AI-generated text. The opposite of authority.

Focusing only on Google. Yes, Google AI Overviews matter. But Perplexity, ChatGPT and Claude are growing faster. Optimize your site for AI models in general, not for a single platform.

Getting started: the only 3 steps that matter

  1. Pick your three most important pages. Rewrite them in question-and-answer format. Actually do it — don't just think about it.
  2. Add JSON-LD structured data. FAQ schema on every page that answers questions, Organization schema on your homepage.
  3. Create an llms.txt file in your root directory. Keep it short, update it whenever your site changes.

That's all you need to get started. The rest is optimization.
