How to Get Cited in Google AI Overviews

Google AI Overviews now sit at the top of the results page for nearly 48% of all searches. Get cited there and you take clicks away from the rest of the page. Miss out and you get skipped entirely. Here's how to improve your odds.

Why this is urgent now

Pages cited in AI Overviews earn around 35% more organic click traffic on average than comparable, non-cited competitors on the same results page. Visitors who arrive through AI search results also convert significantly better than traditional organic traffic.

The window to act is now — not in two years, when everyone is doing it.

How Google selects sources

Important to know: ranking in the top 10 is no longer a guarantee of an AI Overview citation. Research reports a wide range of figures, but the trend is clear: somewhere between 17% and 38% of AI Overview citations now come from pages that don't rank in the classic top 10. Some studies even report that 47% of citations come from pages below position 5.

In other words: the best content wins, not necessarily the highest-ranking content.

5 tactics that demonstrably work

1. Lead with a direct "capsule" answer

Answer the question literally in your first sentence or paragraph. AI Overviews lift these capsules from your page almost word for word. Work out the context and details afterwards.

2. Use definitive language

Text that gets cited contains confident, definitive phrasing almost twice as often (36% versus 20% for non-cited text). Avoid hedgy language like "it could be that..." — be concrete.

3. Build topical authority

AI Overviews cite domains with demonstrable depth on a subject, not standalone pages. Build a cluster of related articles around your core themes, as we explain in our GEO strategy step by step.

4. Keep content current

Content updated within the last 6 months gets cited up to 2x more often. Pages that aren't refreshed every quarter lose their citation status 3x more often.

5. Build authority beyond your own site

Distribution through external, authoritative platforms (trade press, guest articles, review sites) can increase AI citations by up to 325% compared with publishing on your own site alone. 90% of the AI citations that generate brand visibility come from earned or external media — not paid placements.

Watch out: every platform works differently

A crucial insight: only 11% of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity. Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode cite the same URLs in just 14% of cases, despite giving similar answers. Optimizing for one platform therefore doesn't automatically mean visibility on another.

Measuring whether it works

Track, topic by topic, whether an AI Overview appears and whether your domain is mentioned in it. Identify pages that rank well in classic search results but don't earn an AI Overview citation — those are your first candidates for a rewrite with a sharper opening and stronger sourcing.

Conclusion

AI Overviews don't replace classic SEO — they build on it. You still need a solid technical foundation and quality content. But the winning factor is now the way you answer: directly, confidently, currently and with evidence.
